Working Cows at Five Marys
We’re working cows on the ranch today! We have working corrals where we walk the cattle in from pastures and can sort them into groups (the calves today) and we do our health check-ups before sending them back out to pasture.
Cattlemen must work on the health of their herd often. This includes checking their feet, hooves, eyes (pink eye is very common and painful for cattle) and overall body condition. It is very necessary for the health and safety of our cattle, our whole herd and our customers to avoid or limit the need for antibiotics later.
I know there is a lot of controversy over vaccinations, but trust a rancher… it’s VERY important for not only the cattle, but also for the customer and end product too! No, we don’t use mRNA vaccines and we never use growth hormones in our cattle. But, it is so important to care for your cattle with a yearly or seasonal program that protects them against things like pnemounia, clostridials, ecoli and salmonella.
The girls are a huge help in working cows or calves with us. They’ve learned to be calm, slow and steady so the cattle stay calm too. Everyone has a job and usually sticks to the same job every time. After a long day in the sun working cattle, the girls favorite treat is lunch and a milkshake (maybe an ice cold beer for Brian and I!) at Five Marys Burgerhouse!
