Why Use Tallow?

FROM THE RANCH…

Why We Started Making Tallow Skincare on the Ranch

By Mary Heffernan, Five Marys Ranch  |  July 2026

Before beef tallow became one of the most talked-about ingredients on TikTok, it was something tried-and-true that homestead and ranching families had been making and using for generations.

For us, it started with my search for a moisturizer made with ingredients I could pronounce and knowing I wasn’t letting my girls put chemicals and processed ingredients on our largest organ… our skin!

We also have a LOT of all-natural, beef suet from harvesting our own beef and we strongly believe in using the whole animal. Making tallow is a fantastic way to do all of these things - and you can do it too.

It Started With the Girls

With four daughters, all named Mary, we go through a lot of skincare and ranching often means dry hands and dry skin after working outside in the elements all day.

We spend our days outside in the sun, wind, cold, dust, and everything else that comes with raising animals and working with our hands. I wanted a moisturizer we could keep on the counter and use for dry hands, chapped cheeks, elbows and everyday face care.

But every time I picked up a jar at the store, the ingredient list seemed to get longer. I wanted something simpler. I wanted to know what was in it, where the main ingredient came from, and why each ingredient was there.

That search sent me down the rabbit hole of beef tallow skincare.

I started making small batches in my kitchen and adjusting the texture and ingredients until I landed on a formula our family loved. We used it ourselves first. Then friends began asking for jars. Our Five Marys customers wanted to try it too, and what started as one homemade moisturizer slowly grew into an entire collection.

Today, our team makes Five Marys tallow skincare in our dedicated Wellness Kitchen, but the reason behind it is still the same. We wanted straightforward skincare made with an ingredient that came from cattle we knew and raised ourselves.

What is Beef Tallow Skincare?

Beef tallow skincare is made with rendered and purified beef fat, most often from suet.

Suet is the firm, nutrient-dense fat found around the kidneys and other areas of the animal.

At Five Marys, we use suet from cattle raised here on our ranch. It is slowly rendered over several days, carefully strained, and prepared until it is clean, smooth, and ready to use as the base of our skincare products.

The result is a rich, balm-like moisturizer that softens dry-feeling skin and helps hold in moisture. Because tallow is concentrated, you usually need much less than you would with a traditional lotion.

Why Do We Use Tallow from Our Own Cattle?

Knowing where our ingredients come from matters to us.

We raise our cattle here at Five Marys Ranch, and we believe every usable part of the animal has value. Turning suet into tallow allows us to make thoughtful use of more of each animal we raise rather than overlooking an incredibly useful ingredient.

It also gives us something most skincare companies cannot offer: a direct connection to the source of the main ingredient.

We know how our cattle were raised. We know where the tallow came from. We know how it was rendered and what was added to each formula.

That kind of connection is important to me, whether we are talking about the beef we put on the dinner table or the tallow moisturizer we put on our skin.

Why Use Beef Tallow as a Moisturizer?

People choose beef tallow moisturizer because it is rich, simple, and especially helpful for skin that feels dry, tight, or weather-worn.

Tallow has a dense texture that melts as it warms against the skin. It spreads easily, helps soften rough areas, and creates a light barrier that holds moisture in. It works especially well when applied in a very small amount to slightly damp skin.

Our family reaches for it during cold weather, after long days outside, and anytime our hands or faces need a little extra moisture.

Tallow is not a miracle cure, and no single skincare ingredient is perfect for every person. We simply love the way it feels, the simplicity of the formulas, and the fact that the main ingredient comes from our own ranch.

Does Beef Tallow Skincare Smell Like Beef?

Not when you make it the right way, a slow but important process!

Properly rendered tallow has a very mild scent. By the time ours has been slowly rendered and prepared for skincare, it is clean and ready to blend into our different formulas.

Our Pure Unscented Tallow has no added fragrance, so you may notice a very faint natural aroma from the ingredients themselves. Our other products are blended with carefully chosen ingredients such as castor oil, jojoba oil, rosehip oil, aloe, vitamin E, botanicals, and essential oils.

What you notice is the finished product, not a beef smell.

Is Beef Tallow Good for Your Face?

Beef tallow can be a good facial moisturizer for people who enjoy a rich, balm-like product, particularly when their skin feels dry.

The biggest mistake people make with tallow face cream is using too much. This is not a product you need to scoop out by the handful. Start with an amount about the size of a pea, warm it between your fingertips, and gently press it into your skin.

You can always add a little more, but most people are surprised by how far a small amount goes.

Some customers use tallow moisturizer as part of their morning routine. Others prefer it at night or only during dry weather. There is no single right way to use it. Pay attention to what your own skin likes.

Does Beef Tallow Clog Pores?

No skincare ingredient can be guaranteed not to clog pores for every person. Skin is personal, and a product that works beautifully for one person may feel too rich for someone else.

Our Pure Unscented Tallow is made with ranch-raised beef tallow and castor oil. It was created to be a simple everyday moisturizer, but it is still a rich product. Anyone with oily, acne-prone, or highly reactive skin should start with a very small amount.

When trying any new skincare product, test it on a small area first. Give your skin time to respond before applying it more broadly.

We would rather be honest about that than promise that one jar will work exactly the same way for everyone.

Is Skincare Tallow the Same as Cooking Tallow?

Both products begin with rendered beef fat, but they are made for completely different purposes.

Our cooking tallow is a food product intended for frying, roasting, and cooking. Our skincare tallow is blended with cosmetic ingredients and is made for external use.

Do not use a skincare product for cooking, even when tallow is the first ingredient. Always use the product according to the directions on its label.

Which Five Marys Tallow is Right for You?

We started with one jar, but over time our customers asked for different textures, botanical blends, and products for specific parts of their routines.

Pure Unscented Tallow

This is where I recommend starting if you are new to tallow skincare.

Our Pure Unscented Tallow is made with ranch-raised beef tallow and castor oil. It has no added scent and works well as a straightforward moisturizer for the face, hands, elbows, feet, and other areas that tend to get dry. It is also a good choice for anyone who prefers a very short ingredient list with only TWO INGREDIENTS!

Our Frankincense Face Tallow has become a favorite for everyday face care. It combines our ranch-raised tallow with castor oil and frankincense for a rich facial moisturizer with a warm botanical scent.

A small amount goes a long way, especially when applied after washing your face while your skin still has a little moisture on it.

Our Blue Tansy Whip has a soft texture and a distinctive botanical aroma. Customers often choose this one when they want their face tallow to feel a little more special while still getting the rich moisture they expect from a tallow balm.

Lavender and Jasmine Rose offer the same nourishing tallow base with different botanical blends and scents.

Choosing between them mostly comes down to personal preference. Lavender feels familiar and comforting, while Jasmine Rose has a softer floral scent.

Our After Sun product was made for the kind of days our family knows well: long hours outside, lots of sun, and skin that feels ready for moisture at the end of the day.

We use it as part of our after-shower routine when skin feels dry from being outdoors.

Sun Shield is our mineral-based tallow balm made with non-nano zinc oxide for our family’s outdoor routines. Follow the directions on the product label and continue using the sun-safety habits that work for your family.

Magnesium Sleep Cream

Our Magnesium Sleep Cream has become part of many customers’ evening routines. It combines the rich moisture of tallow with magnesium in a body cream designed to be applied before bed.

Arnica Muscle Soother

Muscle Soother is one we keep nearby after long days of ranch work, riding, lifting, and being on our feet. We use it as a massage balm anywhere that could use a little extra attention at the end of the day.

Can You Use Tallow Moisturizer Every Day?

Yes, many people use tallow moisturizer every day, but you may not need much.

Start with a small amount and adjust based on your skin, the weather, and where you are applying it. Your hands may need more than your face. Winter skin may want more moisture than summer skin.

Tallow is especially useful because one jar can go a long way and serve more than one purpose. Ours tends to move around the house. It may start on the bathroom counter, end up beside the kitchen sink, and then get tucked into a bag before a rodeo weekend.

That is how we use skincare in real life around here.

Why We Still Make It

That first jar of tallow was never part of a big business plan. I was trying to make something simple that I felt good about using on my girls.

The fact that so many other families now keep Five Marys tallow on their own bathroom counters still feels incredibly special.

Our collection has grown, our kitchen has grown, and we have learned a lot since those first batches. But the priorities have stayed the same: begin with an ingredient we know, keep the formulas thoughtful, and make products our own family genuinely uses.

That is how Five Marys tallow skincare started, and it is still the reason we care so much about every jar.
